Carpet Cleaning Pet Stains

Cat and Dog
Cleaning cat urine and learning how to clean pet stains from carpet vexes many home owners.  When cleaning pet stains, professionals recommend cleaning products and odor neutralizers while bloggers wave the banner of home remedies.  Below are tips, tricks, and methods for how to clean dog urine from carpet and cleaning cat urine from carpet.

How to Clean Pet Urine from Carpet:

First, soak up as all of the urine.  Use paper towels, a weight (an old heavy book works well), and apply pressure to force the stain at the base of the carpet into the towel.   Douse the area with cool water and soak it up with paper towels again. Repeat until the area is clean.

Pet trainers recommend placing the urine soaked paper towels in the area you want your pet to claim as their bathroom, ie: the litterbox, newspaper, or outdoors.  Your pet uses its sense of smell to determine where to relieve himself or herself and moving it where you want them to go reinforces the training.  Always use positive reinforcement and praise for your pet when training.

How to Clean Pet Urine from Carpet with Vinegar:

Many home cleaning remedies enlist the power of vinegar and those experienced in cleaning cat urine and removing pet stains from carpet sing its praises.  For the next several remedies using vinegar, we recommend using a white distilled vinegar for cleaning pet stains.

Remove as much of the pet stain as possible using paper towels.  Soak the area with vinegar and let sit for a minute.   Next, apply a liberal amount of baking soda to the area. You will hear a fizzing noise letting you know the mixture is working.  Cover the stain with a bowl to avoid kicking baking soda around your home.  Let the mixture sit and work for a day.  Afterwards, clean the baking soda from your carpet. You may need to apply water to remove all of it.

We recommend for the first attempt using vinegar to dilute it with water.  This method creates the solution in one convenient bottle.

1 cup vinegar
1 cup warm water
2 tablespoons of baking soda
Add the baking soda slowly to avoid it fizzing over the top.
Pour the mixture into a spray bottle.

Spray the affected area and let sit for 5 minutes.  Rub the carpet with a soft cloth towel.

Conversely, liberally apply the baking soda directly to the stain and then spray or pour on the vinegar solution.  Let this sit for 5 minutes and then dab the area with a towel.

How to Clean Pet Urine from Carpet with Household Products:

Create a cleaning solution using ¼ teaspoon of dishwashing liquid (that does not contain bleach or lanolin) and one cup of lukewarm water.  Use a paper towel to dap into the solution and blot the stain.  Absorb the moisture with dry paper towels and continue this process until clean or there is no more moisture.

Cleaning Cat Urine with Hydrogen Peroxide:

Mix 1/2 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide with 1 teaspoon of green certified dish liquid.
Soak up all liquid.
Dust stain with baking soda.
Pour on hydrogen peroxide and dish liquid solution.
Scrub in.
Let it sit for 10-15 minutes.
Soak up with towels.

Notes on Cleaning Cat Urine, Cleaning Dog Urine, or Cleaning Pet Stains:

Some floor care and pet experts recommend not using vinegar as the smell attracts pets back to the area and reinforces the idea to use that area as a bathroom.

Some homeowners have encountered issues with discoloration after using vinegar or peroxide.  We recommend testing the solutions and methods on an inconspicuous patch of carpet (a patch in your closet) to determine if it's safe for you.

Do not vacuum baking soda. Baking soda clogs vacuum bags (and if bagless, filters) which chokes the motor burning it out exponentially faster.
