Dyson Air Multiplier Technology

Ever wanted to know the ins and out of Dyson's patented air multiplier technology? Well, you've come to the right place. eVacuumStore has the scoop on this innovative staple of every fan and heater manufactured by Dyson.

As a rule, Dyson builds their products around consumer problems. For example, Dyson cyclone technology was developed as an answer to frequent loss of suction. In the same way, Dyson ball technology was developed to eliminate awkward maneuvering that's commonplace when your vacuum cleaner tries to turn a corner.

Dyson AM06 10 Inch FanUnleashed in October of 2009, Dyson's air multiplier technology addresses the constant "slapping" one can feel from a traditional fan when air is chopped up by rotating blades and sent towards you. Upon first glance, a user notices that Dyson's fans have no detectable fan blades. With that said, it almost seems like magic that a Dyson Fan can deliver powerful yet evenly distributed airflow. However, the latter is possible due to blades hidden inside the pedestal and Malaysian engineers employing the physical laws of inducement and entrainment to their favor.

To start off, a brushless electric motor located in the center of the pedestal rotates nine asymmetrically aligned blades that pull 5.28 gallons of air per second into the device. From there, the air flows through a channel located inside the pedestal and curves around Dyson Air Multiplierthe fan frame until it exits via small 16mm slits at a 16 degree angle. This alone creates a pocket of air flow the size of Dyson's fan frame. However, the physical laws of inducement and entrainment draw in surrounding air to multiply the airflow 16 times the amount that was originally drawn in. Air that is drawn through the tube from behind the fan is said to be induced air, and air that is drawn through the tube from the surrounding edges of the fan frame is said to be entrained air. With all sources combined, you have a fan with an airflow rate of 55 mph.

Not only that, you have a fan that is easy to clean and safe to the touch. With a traditional fan, you have to clean each individual blade one by one. However, with a Dyson fan, you can use a soft cloth to clean the frame in a matter of minutes. Moreover, with no fast-spinning blades, you can place these units in a child's bedroom and not have to worry about it being a safety hazard. Lastly, having the fans electrical components stored inside the pedestal creates a low center of gravity that makes it safe and easy to pivot the fan 10-degrees to the left or to the right.
