We put the Dyson Origin Multi Floor upright vacuum cleaner through its paces on bare floors, a Berber rug, low-pile commercial carpeting, and a deep shag carpet. It arrived in our office fully assembled and ready to clean.
We recently acquired a decibel reader and will now jump at any opportunity to use it. Across the duration of this test, the Origin registered at an average of 73 decibels with its brushroll running, and at 72 without it. This is right on par with many residential upright vacuum cleaners that we've tested. For comparison, this sound level is about the average listening volume of a television or radio.

The Dyson Origin Multi Floor upright vacuum cleaner packs Dyson's Radial Root Cyclone Technology into acompact, lightweight package. Because it weighs only 14.6 pounds, transportation between rooms and across multiple levels is exceptionally easy. This lightweight configuration also contributes to the Origin's ease of use. While some uprights can be bulky and difficult to push, the Origin maneuvers easily over any floor surface. It seemed to float over each floor type, from our tile to deep-pile shag carpeting and everything in between. We did not have to manually adjust this vacuum's height settings to accommodate different floor types: the Origin's active base plate and self-adjusting cleaner head did all the work for us.
Releasing the Origin from its locked upright position is easy, and does not require the use of a foot pedal. Simply pull the vacuum's handle towards you, and its supportive back wheels will retract. This granted us unbridled maneuverability and the ability to turn quickly and easily to ensure. This is thanks in no small part to Dyson's innovative ball technology, one of the brand's trademark features.
When the vacuum is returned to its free-standing upright position, it will automatically redirect its airflow from the power nozzle up through the cleaning wand, which stores in the back of its handle. This granted us instant use of the extension wand when we stood the vacuum up. When fully extended, the Origin's telescopic cleaning wand and extension hose combined to grant us 11.5 feet of above-the-floor cleaning range. We used this extended range to clean those pesky corners along the ceiling where cobwebs seem to gather, and were impressed with the suction power this functionality offered.

When we were done cleaning, we removed the dustcup from the housing and emptied its contents directly into the trash. This is just as simple as it sounds. A switch on the top of the dustcup opens a hatch on its bottom, releasing everything contained inside straight down without spreading debris or creating puffs of dust.
This central piece also contains one of the Origin's two washable filters. To access this, simply open the lid and remove the cylindrical filter contained in the center. It is simple to remove and easy to wash. After washing, leave it to dry for at least 24 hours before returning it to the vacuum, and it will be ready to clean again whenever you are.
The Dyson Origin Multi Floor upright vacuum cleaner offers the maneuverability and suction power we expect from Dyson in a compact, lightweight configuration.
