If your Electrolux central vacuum has lost suction, is making unusual noises, or has stopped running altogether, replacing the motor may restore it to like-new performance. Follow these step-by-step instructions to safely replace the motor in your Electrolux central vacuum system.

Before You Begin

  • Turn off the central vacuum system.

  • Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.

  • Disconnect the low-voltage control wiring from the unit.

  • Have the replacement motor and any necessary gaskets ready before starting the repair.

Step 1: Remove the Vacuum Canister from the Wall

  1. Disconnect the power cord and low-voltage wiring.

  2. Using both handles, carefully lift the canister straight up to remove it from the wall mounting bracket.

  3. Place the unit on a stable work surface or on the floor.

Step 2: Remove the Top Cover

  1. Locate the three screws securing the top cover.

  2. Remove all three screws.

  3. Lift off the top cover to expose the motor assembly.

Step 3: Remove the Existing Motor

  1. Locate the three motor mounting bolts.

  2. Remove all three bolts.

  3. Disconnect the motor wiring leads.

  4. Carefully lift the motor out of the canister.

Important

Before discarding the old motor, remove the motor coupling attached to the motor horn and transfer it to the new motor if required.

Step 4: Clean and Inspect the Unit

With the motor removed:

  • Clean the motor screen beneath the motor housing.

  • Remove any accumulated dust or debris.

  • Inspect the wiring and mounting hardware for signs of wear or damage.

A clean screen helps maximize airflow and extends the life of the new motor.

Step 5: Install the New Motor

  1. Verify that the motor gasket is properly positioned between the motor and the canister housing.

  2. Place the new motor into position.

  3. Reinstall and tighten the three mounting bolts evenly.

  4. Reconnect the motor wiring leads.

Important

The gasket creates an airtight seal between the motor and the canister. Operating the vacuum without a proper seal can reduce suction and decrease system performance.

Step 6: Reassemble the Vacuum

  1. Reinstall the top cover.

  2. Secure it with the three screws removed earlier.

  3. Lift the unit back onto the wall mounting bracket.

  4. Reconnect the low-voltage wiring.

  5. Plug the power cord back into the outlet.

Step 7: Test the System

Turn on the central vacuum and verify:

  • The motor starts properly.

  • Suction has been restored.

  • No unusual noises or vibrations are present.

  • The unit shuts off correctly when the hose is disconnected.

Signs Your Electrolux Central Vacuum Motor Needs Replacement

  • Motor will not start

  • Burning smell from the power unit

  • Excessive noise or vibration

  • Reduced suction performance

  • Motor intermittently shuts off

  • Visible sparking from the motor

Replacing a worn motor is often the most cost-effective way to extend the life of your Electrolux central vacuum and restore full cleaning performance.
