How To Clean A Dyson Filter

Dyson cordless vacuum filters catch tiny particles, which can reduce performance over time due to debris buildup. Regularly cleaning the filter can maintain suction power. Follow this guide to learn how to clean your Dyson vacuum filter based on your specific model.

Dyson V11

To properly clean the filter unit of your Dyson V11, follow these steps:

1. Wash the filter unit monthly or when the "filter needs cleaning" message appears.
2. Twist the filter unit counterclockwise to remove it.
3. Tap the filter unit lightly on the side of the sink or a bin to remove excess dust and debris.
4. Wash the filter in cold water only.
5. Run water over the pleated paper with the foam element downwards until the water runs clear.
6. Rinse the foam element inside and out with cold water, squeezing gently to remove dirt.
7. Fill the filter unit with cold water, cover the open ends with your hands, and shake gently until the water runs clear.
8. Shake the filter unit to remove excess water and let it dry completely for at least 24 hours.
9. Ensure the filter unit is completely dry before reattaching.
10. To reattach, twist the filter unit clockwise until it clicks into place.

Dyson V10

Here is the step-by-step process to clean the filter on your Dyson V10:


1. Wash the filter unit of the Dyson V10 either monthly or when the filter light is on.
2. Twist the filter unit anticlockwise to open it and gently remove it, clearing any excess debris.
3. Wash the inside of the filter unit by holding it upright under cold tap water and agitating it in a rotating motion.
4. Wash the outside of the filter unit by filling it with cold water, covering the open end with your hand, and shaking gently until the water runs clear.
5. Tap the filter unit lightly to remove excess water.
6. Allow the filter unit to dry with the open end facing up for at least 24 hours.
7. Ensure the filter unit is completely dry before reattaching it.
8. To reattach, return the filter to the open position and twist it clockwise until it clicks into place.

Dyson V8

Follow these instructions to clean the pre filter and the post filter on your Dyson V8.

1. Switch "Off" and unplug the Dyson V8 before washing the filters.
2. Lift the pre-filter out of the cyclone assembly.
3. Rotate the post filter anti-clockwise until the two solid black dots line up, then pull the post filter off the back of the machine.
4. Turn the pre-filter upside down and tap to remove any excess debris.
5. Tap and shake the filter to expel all debris, then run cold water over it. Repeat the process until the water runs clear.
6. Squeeze and twist the filter with both hands to remove excess water.
7. Run water into the open side of the post filter, tap and shake to expel debris, and repeat until the water runs clear.
8. Leave the filters to dry for at least 24 hours.
9. Ensure the filter unit is completely dry before refitting it to the machine.
10. Refit the pre-filter into the cyclone assembly and the post filter onto the machine. For the post filter, align the two solid black dots, and rotate clockwise until they line up with the empty circle.

Dyson V7

These steps will help you maintain your Dyson V7 filter:

1. Turn the Dyson V7 "Off" and unplug it.
2. Lift the filter out of the cyclone assembly.
3. Remove any excess debris from the filter.
4. Wash the filter using cold water.
5. Rinse water over both the inside and outside of the filter.
6. Tap and shake the filter to remove debris.
7. Repeat washing until water runs clear.
8. Squeeze and twist the filter to remove excess water.
9. Allow the filter to dry for at least 24 hours.
10. Ensure the filter is completely dry before reattaching.
11. Refit the pre-filter back into the cyclone assembly.

Dyson V6

Easily clean your Dyson V6 filter by adhering to these instructions:

1. Turn the Dyson V6 "Off" and unplug it before starting maintenance.
2. Remove the pre-filter from the cyclone assembly.
3. Twist the post filter anti-clockwise to release and remove it.
4. Lightly tap the filter unit to remove excess dust and debris before washing it in cold water.
5. Wash the pre-filter inside and out with water.
6. Shake the filter to remove debris until the water runs clear.
7. Squeeze and twist to remove excess water.
8. Rinse the open side of the post filter.
9. Shake the filter to remove debris until the water runs clear.
10. Allow the filters to dry for at least 24 hours.
11. Ensure the filters are completely dry before reattaching them to the machine.
12. Fit the pre-filter back into the cyclone assembly and reattach the post filter by twisting it clockwise until it snaps into place.
