How To Maintain Your Electrolux 1590 Central Vacuum

An Electrolux 1590 Central Vacuum is a great central vacuum, but just like all vacuums including Dyson and Shark it can loose suction if not properly maintained. If you're experiencing a loos of suction then we recommend first going o the power unit to check the dirt bucket. Other times a clog can occur in the central vacuum hose or even in the pipes in the walls, but have no fear they all can be fixed.

First go to the power unit and remove the dirt bucket, dust cone and filter as show below. The filter on the 1590 Electrolux Central Vacuum is attached with a wing nut and a retaining ring, so set these items aside so they do not get lost. After you have removed the bucket you will see from the image below that 1/4 filled bucket can have an impact on the suction. Ideally you do not want to fill the dust above the dirt cone bottom.

Some customers ask the best way to empty the Electrolux 1590 dirt bucket. The first option is dump it in to a trash bag so this will contain most of the dust. Other customers use 1590 central vacuum bags, and others just go outside and dump it in to a trash can. Dumping in to a trash can can create a cloud of dust and is not conducive to people that have allergies so asthma. See the image below that show how you can take a tall kitchen bag and put it over the top of the full dirt bucket so you can pour the dust in to the trash bag.

Next we recommend cleaning the filter with another vacuum. We have to warn you that this is a dirty dusty job and you should wear a mask. Another option is to just throw out the dirty filter if you have allergies or asthma and just replace it with a ele. Even though these filters are washable at some point they will need to be replaced. The foam filters can be washed with soap and cold water and then hung out to dry before replacing. Older 4 inch diameter foam filters and paper pleated filters should be disposed of since they are can be at least 15-20 years old. The blue scalloped 8 inch diameter filter is the new improved design that should be used for optimal performance and motor protection.

Finally before you install your filter you will need to look up at the motor screen in the filter housing. Make sure this screen is clear and does not have any dust build up to restrict the airflow. If this screen is clogged then this will have a major impact on the suction.
