When we were getting ready to clean, one reviewer noted that the Onyx's cord seemed endless.(After the test,wemeasured it at 29 feet.) This came in especially handy when we set out to clean the entire break room and main lobby in our office building. For the purpose of this test, we were able to clean both rooms without once needing to change power outlets. Despite its generous length, the cord retracts quickly and easily with just the touch of the pedal on the Onyx's canister. There is no need to hold the pedal down; just tap it once, and the Onyx will do the rest.
All of the Onyx's controls-- including its on/off switch-- are located on its canister. For variable suction control, the canister is equipped with a handy six-setting dial with pictographs demarcating each of its different settings. (The Onyx offers different suction levels for upholstery, carpeting, hardwood floors, throw rugs, and drapery. The sixth setting is "quiet mode," which offers the the quietest possible operation for a powerful suction setting.)
We know from experience that Miele vacuum cleaners are known for their remarkable suction power, and the Miele Onyx is no exception. What surprised us during this test was its quiet operation. Even when the Onyx wasn't set to "quiet mode," we were able to converse normally without shouting over the vacuum.The Miele Compact C2 Onyx comes equipped with the STB205-3 Turbo Brush for carpeting and hardwood, and includes the SBB300-3 Parquet Twister floor brush. The Turbo Brush offers great maneuverability, making easy work of cleaning around the table and chair legs in our break room. A sliding switch on the Turbo Brush's hood adjusts its airflow for better suction power on different surface types. We tried out both configurations on our low-pile carpeting, and regardless of whether the hatch was opened or not, the Onyx quickly picked up all the ground-up dirt, crumbs, and other debris we could see.

This is a handy feature for both storage and for transporting the Onyx up and down stairs.
Overall, we were very pleased with the vacuuming experience that the Miele Onyx provided us. What impressed us most was its quiet operation and incredible cleaning on both tile and low-pile carpeting.
