Pre-motor vs. post-motor HEPA filters

Most Dyson vacuums use two filters. The pre-motor filter (also called a prefilter) sits before the motor and catches fine dust the cyclones miss, which protects the motor and keeps suction strong. The post-motor filter, usually a HEPA filter, sits after the motor and traps fine particles before air leaves the vacuum, which helps allergy sufferers. Newer cordless models such as the V10, V11, V12, V15 and Gen5 combine filtration into a single filter unit at the back of the machine.

Frequently asked questions

Which filter fits my Dyson vacuum?

Find your model in the tables above. Filters are model-specific, so a V10 filter will not fit a V11, and a DC25 filter will not fit a DC40. If your model isn't listed, call us at 866-972-8227 and we'll help you find the right filter.

How do I find my Dyson model number?

Look for the serial number sticker on the vacuum. On cordless models it is usually on the main body near the battery. On uprights and canisters it is usually on the base or behind the bin. The model appears on the sticker or at the start of the serial number, for example SV12 for a V10 or DC25.

Are Dyson filters washable, or do I need to replace them?

Many Dyson filters are washable. Rinse them in cold water only, without detergent, and let them air-dry completely before reinstalling. Check your manual for your model's cleaning schedule. Replace a filter if it is torn or damaged, still looks dirty after washing, smells, or your vacuum keeps losing suction after cleaning.

Are these genuine Dyson filters?

Some are and some are not. This page includes genuine Dyson filters and compatible replacement filters. The compatible filters are made to fit the listed Dyson models but are not made by Dyson; Clean Obsessed is one compatible brand we carry for several DC models. Check the product title and description to see which type each filter is, or call us at 866-972-8227.

Why is my Dyson losing suction?

The most common cause is a dirty or clogged filter. Wash or replace the filter, empty the bin, and check the wand, hose and cleaner head for blockages.
