Why Does My Ice Have Black Plastic Flakes?

Why Does My Ice Have Black Plastic Flakes?

So did you ever notice a black plastic flake in your ice bin? Well your not the only one. This happens as a result of the ice maker coating breaking down and attaching to your ice when the ices does from the ice maker to the holding container. This can be highly toxic if ingested, so we recommend replacing your ice maker as soon as possible. And replacing your ice maker does not require buying a new refrigerator - all you need to purchase is the replacement ice maker component for your make and model refrigerator. In this case we reviewed a Sub-Zero model 532 refrigerator and removed the ice maker.
Black plastic in my ice maker

When we first removed the ice maker we were unsure if the problem was from the faulty component until we took a close look. After taking a close look you will see the black plastic coating is peeling off the housing for each of the ice cubes.

The repair is fairly easy and requires unplugging the refrigerator for about a half an hour. Once you remove the ice maker which is held in by 3 screws, you will need to depress the lock on the power cord to the ice maker and now you can swap the old unit for the new unit. Once you complete the installation, make sure to dispose of your old ice and wait a few hours for new crystal clear cubes. Now your ready to enjoy toxic free ice!
